Must-Do’s to Prepare Your Garden For Spring

The Spring planting season has arrived, and after the cold weather and snow, gardeners are eager to create their best raised bed gardens yet.  Garden Girls help over 50 clients in Houston refresh their gardens each season .  Here are must do steps in preparing and planting a spring garden:

  • Clean-out:  Start by removing any plants that are no longer in season or showing signs of disease. Check your herbs—if they’ve become too woody or are harboring pests, it’s time to replace them.

  • Add Compost and Fertilizer:  Refresh your soil by adding locally sourced leaf mold compost to your raised beds. Then, top it off with a granular slow-release fertilizer and some blood meal, which gives your plants a nitrogen boost for healthy growth.

  • Check Irrigation:  Run your irrigation system to ensure it’s working properly, and adjust the watering schedule to suit the season’s needs.

  • Plant Seasonal Favorites:  Make a list of vegetables, herbs, and flowers that are in season, focusing on what you’ll use and enjoy most. If you’re unsure what’s in season, our garden planner is a wonderful resource to help you decide.

  • Layout Your Plants:  When planting, start with crops that need trellises for support, such as tomatoes and cucumbers. Next, add larger plants like eggplant, basil, or zucchini. Finally, fill in with medium and smaller plants or flowers. For guidance, check out our Spring Planting E-book, which offers tips on layout and spacing.

  • Water:  After planting, water your garden thoroughly. Continue watering daily for the next 7–10 days to encourage seed germination and help transplants settle in.

  • Enjoy!  The first month of spring gardening is all about harvesting herbs and watching your plants thrive. With a little rain, you’ll be amazed at how quickly your garden can grow—so take time to enjoy the process!
