3 Foolproof veggies to grow this Season - Spring edition
Spring in Houston is the perfect time to get planting and some of our favorite things to grow are fresh peppers, crisp bush beans, and spicy arugula. With Houston’s warm climate, you’ll be harvesting these delicious crops in no time. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:
Peppers: A Crunchy Favorite
Peppers thrive in Houston’s warm spring weather and are a colorful, flavorful addition to any garden. Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or plant transplants outdoors in mid to late March when nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F. Use nutrient-rich, well-draining soil, and space plants 18–24 inches apart for proper airflow. Water deeply, let the soil dry slightly between waterings, and provide support with stakes or cages as they grow. Harvest peppers when they’re fully colored and firm to enjoy their best flavor.
Bush Beans: Easy and Productive
Bush beans are a low-maintenance, high-yield vegetable that’s perfect for beginner and seasoned gardeners alike. Sow seeds directly into your garden bed after the last frost, usually mid-March in Houston. Plant seeds 1 inch deep and 2–4 inches apart, spacing rows about 18–24 inches apart. Use well-draining soil enriched with compost, and water consistently to keep the soil moist. Harvest beans when they’re young and tender, about 4–6 inches long, to encourage continuous production.
Arugula: The Spicy Superstar
Arugula is a fast-growing leafy green that adds a spicy kick to your meals. Directly sow seeds into your garden as early as February or March, planting them 1/4 inch deep and 1 inch apart in rows spaced 12 inches apart. Keep the soil moist, as arugula can become bitter if it dries out, and provide partial shade if temperatures rise too quickly. Begin harvesting leaves when they’re 3–4 inches long, about 4 weeks after planting, and enjoy regular cuttings to promote new growth.
General Tips for Success
Sunlight: All three crops thrive with at least 6 hours of sunlight daily, so choose a sunny spot for your garden.
Pest Patrol: Watch for pests like aphids and caterpillars. Solutions like neem oil or insecticidal soap can keep pests at bay.
Raised Beds: Houston’s clay soil can hold too much water, so raised beds filled with nutrient-rich soil are ideal for preventing soggy roots and ensuring proper drainage. Contact a us for a Garden Consultation!
