A West University Garden Brings Joy To The Neighborhood
A garden fulfills so many purposes. And, Garden Girls was thrilled when a West University family trusted us to install a kitchen garden for beauty, production, and a place for all the neighborhood walkers to enjoy.
During every consultation, we discuss the importance of sunlight. Originally, our West University family wanted the kitchen garden in their backyard. We knew production would be limited as sunlight was limited. However, sunlight was abundant just outside the backyard fence along the side of their property near the sidewalk. This ended up being a perfect spot for the garden because the client gets to enjoy it every time they pull into their driveway and all the neighborhood pedestrians get to admire the beauty, growth, and bees and butterflies as they walk by.
Embrace the Shady Spots in Your Yard
In addition to installing a kitchen garden where the sunlight was premium, our West University client trusted us to transform the backyard with shade loving plants. The trick to designing landscaping with lots of shade is to choose plants with different leaf shapes, textures and heights. We used ajuga as a ground cover, which has purple foliage. We planted turk's cap, which is a wonderful shade loving plant that attracts pollinators to your yard. We chose sweet viburnum, giant liriope, and ferns as anchor plants. And, to help meal prep go quickly, we added small planters filled with herbs on the back porch, which is steps away from the kitchen.
