Maximizing Garden Space in Smaller Yards

Do you dream of having a kitchen garden but think your yard is too small?   Some of the Garden Girls’ favorite gardens occupy smaller spaces.

Believe us- you can have a garden of your dreams even if you live inside the Houston loop.  Here are our tips for maximizing your outdoor area.

Consider Border Gardens

Border gardens are gardens that have access from three (not four) sides, thus bordering up against a fence, house or other object.  To save room, install border gardens. These four kitchen gardens inside the loop provide over 65 square feet of garden space while still allowing for a green space for kids to play.

Choose Steel Garden Beds

One of the easiest ways to maximize your garden space is to choose a steel container.  Steel has a reduced footprint compared to cedar or stone, thus giving more room for plants.  This River Oaks home is a great example of maximizing the garden area with two steel containers.

Take It to the Front

Think how underutilized our front yards are in Houston!  The front yard is a great place for a kitchen garden.  A front-yard garden adds interest and beauty to the home, plus encourages the gathering of friends, family and neighbors.  We love hearing pedestrians remark on a garden’s splendor as they walk past it.  Front-yard gardens are a win for the client and the neighborhood.

Tuck Away with Existing Landscaping

Another easy way to incorporate a kitchen garden in a smaller space is to tuck it away with other landscaping.  This West University home has a steel bed tucked in with boxwoods and roses.  The garden is a true statement piece.

As we approach Spring, think about utilizing your outdoor space (big or small) and add a kitchen garden.  We promise the kitchen garden will give you a retreat right outside your door.  Are you ready to let yourself grow?  Book a consult now.
