A Houston Kitchen Garden with a Fun, Timeless Design

Any garden is magical to the Garden Girls because gardens nourish our body and soul.  They are the sparkle to a home or business.  And, sometimes we get a dream project like this one in Meyerland, Houston where the client has ample sunlight and space to go BIG!!  So where do we begin?

Garden Design

The first step in any garden design is to look at sunlight as sunlight is a critical factor in production.  This Meyerland yard gets plenty of sunlight with abundant space.  Thus, the next factor to consider was proximity to the kitchen.  We want gardeners using and enjoying their gardens.  And, we are more likely to use things that we see every day.  Therefore, we decided to place the gardens close to the kitchen’s access with the bonus of having windows that looked out onto the gardens.

Finally, we discussed with the client what she wanted to grow and what her family enjoyed eating.  That discussion led to the decision that she needed gardens big enough to hold larger plants like tomatoes, zucchini and melons.  We ended up with four 10’ x 3.5’ gardens with arch trellises for added vertical growing space.

Here Comes the Fun

After exploring the client’s current garden endeavors, we found that she had a number of citrus trees in pots and stock tanks.  It was like finding a pot of gold!!  We were overjoyed to use both the citrus trees and stock tanks in the new garden space.  The citrus trees line the garden area to create an inviting, cozy space.  The stock tanks are used for mint (always plant solo), strawberries, and zinnias for cut flowers.
